The Magazine World

Today we learned about how the content of a magazine reflects the targetted audience, both in the articles and the products that are being advertised. We also discovered the widespread use of digital modifying techniques and how difficult it is to distinguish between "real" and computer generated images.

For today's entry, describe a magazine that you subscribe to or read regularly. Include the targetted demographic and the tone. In addition, look at the images in your magazine and tell us how many you think are computer generated or enhanced. Looking at the modified images in particular, choose one and explain what type of messages it sends to you as a reader and whether or not you should believe these messages.

Have a great weekend!

  1. well i read one that is for teenagers, and younger women. the tone is like all about girl stuff. i think like all of then are fake, and have all had a bit of touch ups, i dont think i should believe these messages
but when they show the enhanced pics, and imply that that is beautiful, everyone starts to think it is beautiful, so what girls are trying to be is not real, and there for can never be achieved, so we are setting an expectation for our selves that is impossible to get at

  2. I enjoy reading magazines that cath my eye and interest me, magazines like Rolling stone, Spin and Alternative press. The targetted demographic is for men and woman aged 18-40. Most images in these magazines are either advertisement or images of bands and single music artists.

Of course most images are enhanced, but to a certain point you can tell they are real based on there appearance and how most people in these magazines are unattractive. But in the end these arn't popular magazines to most teens, but cosmo and 17 are which create false pictures to teens and how once again we strive to be perfect based on what we think is real.

  3. I was once a subscriber to popular machanics. It was suggest to the typical teenager who had interest in the advancement in today's products. It's tone was serious and very stiff. It was stating facts and making points. If any photos were enhanced it was just to make it look more exciting. Kinda tryin to get the consumer to get the product and learn how cool and interestig it really is. A message it might be tryig to get across is that techinal things are not boring and to hard to learn about. ox-ButterFlyGirl-xo
